The Maldives Anthropological Society (MAS) is a dedicated collective of researchers, storytellers, and cultural advocates committed to preserving and celebrating the Maldives’ rich heritage. Founded in 2024, we work at the intersection of anthropology, history, and community engagement to document the traditions, languages, and ecosystems that define our island nation.
Our Mission
MAS exists to:
- Research and document the unique cultural and natural heritage of the Maldives.
- Preserve at-risk traditions, from Giraavaru indigenous knowledge to traditional crafts like rush-mat weaving and dance.
- Share stories through initiatives like Echoes of the Islands (folklore preservation) and the Bodu Thakurufaanu Comic Project.
- Bridge the past and future by making heritage accessible through digital archives, publications, and educational projects.
Our Work
In our inaugural year, we launched critical projects, including:
- Giraavaru Cultural Research: An ethnographic study of the Maldives’ indigenous community.
- Traditional Craft Preservation: Documenting rush-mat weaving and Maldivian dance forms.
- Digital Storytelling: Collaborating with publishers and artists to share Maldivian history in innovative ways.
Join Our Journey
As a young organization, we rely on partnerships and community support to amplify our impact. Whether you’re a researcher, donor, volunteer, or culture enthusiast, you can help us:
- Protect endangered traditions.
- Build a digital heritage archive.
- Educate future generations.
Together, we can ensure the Maldives’ legacy thrives.
